Harebell (Campanula rotundifolia), also called Scottish Bluebell or Fairy Thimbles, is a widespread, slender-stemmed perennial of the family Campanulaceae. The harebell bears nodding delicate blue bell-like flowers. It is native to woods, meadows, and cliffsides of northern Eurasia of mountains farther south. Small, round, basal leaves disappear before the flowers form, leaving only long, slender stem leaves. The delicate stems of harebells grow in clumps and reach a height of 1 to 2 feet. Each stem bears one to several drooping blue-violet bells. Although demure in stature, Harebell is one tough cookie. Extremely drought tolerant, Campanula rotundifolia loves dry sandy and gravelly soils making it a good species for rock or xeric gardens, and semi-shaded slopes. Attracts Butterflies and Bee’s. Zone 3-9b.
