Penstemon whippleanus, also known as Wipple's Penstemon, grows up to two feet tall and is a rare find. It is a native wildflower that enjoys alpine meadows or lightly wooded rocky slopes. This striking dark purple to burgundy wild flower is one of the many species of penstemons that grow throughout the Rocky Mountains; it is named after railroad route explorer Amiel Weeks Whipple (1816 -1863) who surveyed possible routes for the Transcontinental Railroad from Arkansas through the Panhandle of Oklahoma and onwards to Los Angeles. Perennial zone 4-8. Very attractive to bees.

Other Names: Dusky Beardtongue, Beard Tongue, Pride of the Mountain, rare wildflower, unusual wildflower, rare Penstemon
