Also known as Bearberry, the cranberry is a native American fruit best suited for cooler climates. Large, red, vitamin-filled berries are produced on evergreen plants in mid to late summer.
The plant is a low-growing, trailing, woody vine with a perennial habit. Cranberries produce stems or runners from one to six feet long. During the growing season, the leaves are dark green and glossy, turning reddish-brown during the dormant season. The vines form a thick mat over the surface of a cultivated bed.
Cranberries can be processed into juice, sauce, jam, and sweetened dried cranberries. Use frozen cranberries in drinks instead of ice-cubes or fresh in pies. Raw cranberries are considered a "superfruit" due to their nutrient content and antioxidant qualities. Zone 2-7
