The snake gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) is normally grown in areas that have a warmer climate and they do resemble a snake when they are fully grown. The fruits are a light green color and sometimes develop markings. They resemble the shape of a squash but the ends of the fruit are curled and this is why it is called a snake gourd.
This plant needs plenty of water. The fruits are extremely large and since this plant only thrives in hot temperatures it should be watered frequently. This is one of the few rare gourds that is actually edible. If harvested slightly immature, the fleshy interior can be prepared similar to eggplant. They are just as good as zucchini squash, some say better because of firmer texture and a mild, never bitter taste. Also known as Cucuzzi Carazazzi. Great for food or dried for artwork.

Other Names: Zucca, suzza melon, googootz, Longissima
